Treatment with the gamma knife may complement
conventional radiation therapy for brain tumors. Since
the radiation dose is precisely localized to the tumor
volume with radiosurgery, a concentrated "boost" dose of
radiation can be given in conjunction with conventional
radiotherapy. This increases the probability of tumor
control and limits radiation exposure to healthy
surrounding brain tissue.
Gamma Knife radoisurgery costs no more than conventional
brain surgery. with significantly reduced time required
for patient care and recovery in the hospital. Patients
can return to pre-surgery type activities within a much
shorter period of time than conventional surgery. |
